CHARLOTTE -- Police are investigating a pair of highway shootings
that occurred a few minutes apart Monday morning.
Truck driver Granger Hicks says he was in shock after being shot
as he drove down Interstate 77 near the John Belk Freeway.
“I just thank God I wasn't hurt because that pellet came right
through my side of the window,” he said.
It turns out the shooter used BB pellets, but Hicks says they can
be just as dangerous as real bullets.
“They could have killed me and I could have killed someone
else with that big truck,” he said.
Three minutes later and a couple of miles up the road, police received
a report of another truck driver shot with BB pellets.
Hicks said the shooters appeared to be a group of teenagers playing
a dangerous prank.
“Once the glass came in, I glanced back. They looked as though
they were eager to see what they had done, they were turned all
around in the back of the car looking to see what they had done,”
he said.
Both Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and highway patrol officers say
this type of highway shooting is very uncommon, however a 26-year-old
man was killed in May in a highway shooting on Interstate 85 in
western Mecklenburg County.
